A hacking case that allegedly affected more than 100 celebrities is under investigation by both Apple and the FBI. The celebrities are believed to have had nude or otherwise personal images stolen and posted on the internet.
The photos were published recently on an online message board before they went viral, which alerted the celebrities involved, one of whom was Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence. It is understood that Lawrence made contact with the police.
It wasn’t long before Apple’s iCloud was named in the incident, with theories making their way around the internet that vulnerabilities in the service led to the incident. Apple said that it was looking into the matter when speaking to The Wall Street Journal. The FBI spoke about the issue on the same day, confirming to news sources that it was also investigating the leak.
After the tech firm looked into the incident, Apple was satisfied that its iCloud service was not a part of the problem.
However, the company asked users to reset passwords as a precaution, and to enable a two-step verification.
The issue of hacking has been prevalent for some time and when a company like Apple is thrown into the spotlight in such an incident, it demonstrates the extent of the problem. It is imperative that SMEs up and down the UK show more vigilance when it comes to protecting their customer data so that leaks don’t occur within their systems. By opening and filling cyber security jobs, they are taking a significant step towards that protection.
