A proposal for a cyber-crime fighting hub is being made as a part of Brierfield Mill’s £25m vision, which would create 2,250 jobs in the process.
Joe Cooney, leader for Pendle Council, has confirmed that discussions are taking place to form the North-East Lancashire Cyber Security Business Park, as a part of a bid for the ex-Smith and Nephew premises.
The Lancashire Telegraph said last year that the site could facilitate a climbing centre, hotel and marina, as long as an initial £5m in finance could be secured.
A large part of the mill site, however, was taken up by a business hub which could be used to house firms that target cyber-crime, as well as a potential new Lancashire Institute of Cyber Security Training.
Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson said that the plans could help to retain the area’s most skilled staff. He said:
“Something like this is so important to our area.
“So many young people think they have to move away to one of the big cities so this will be a great way of keeping some of our most talented youngsters.”
Details related to the park were revealed recently when Vince Cable, the business secretary, visited East Lancashire and the mill, and he made it clear that he backs the project.
Such recognition of the value of cyber security professionals can only be pleasing to those applying for IT risk management jobs, either now or at some point in the future.
