On Friday the 12th May the world experiences on of the most coordinated ransomware attacks to date, known as WannaCrypt. This cyber attack caused the NHS to cancel appointments, surgeries and A&E admissions.
Education is critical in protecting your business against cyber threats. It is important that your staff understands how ransomware works and the threats it poses to your business.
1. Be careful not to click on harmful links in your emails. (BAD GRAMMAR AND MISSPELLINGS – This is the most basic and important clue!).
2. A person you have never heard of sends you an attachment or ZIP file using the words Invoice, CV, Application, Purchase Order or Receipt. If you work with customers on a daily basis and you don’t recognize the name or email. Please make sure to first query their names or emails on our databases BEFORE opening any attachments from strangers.
3. Be wary of visiting unsafe or unreliable sites.
4. Never click on a link that you do not trust on a web page or access to Facebook or messaging applications such as WhatsApp and other applications.
5. If you receive a message from your friend with a link, ask him before opening the link to confirm, (infected machines send random messages with links).
6. Be aware of fraudulent e-mail messages that use names similar to popular services such as PayePal instead of PayPal or use popular service names without commas or excessive characters.
7. Alarmist messages and threats of account closures (i.e. “You have 24 hours before your account or shipment gets cancelled”).
8. Promises of money for little or no effort and deals that sound too good to be true.
9. Requests to donate to a charitable organization after a disaster.
Do not turn your computer off or close the ransomware warning window.
Immediately disconnect from the internet and your home network.
Do not remain connected to the internet or connect any other devices (your phone, for example) to your computer.
Contact a Ransomware specialist.
Backing up your system, files and data provides of a secondary layer of protection. Firstly, you do not have to pay ransom to recover your data. Next, you restore to a point before the attack happened; therefore, you can be certain that your data is clean and secure from future attacks.
Data protection solutions allow you to run applications from backups of virtual machines. That way you can recover your data instantly after the attack. Instant data recovery technology can be useful for recovering from ransomware attack as it allows the user to continue working as the primary system restores.
