The FBI has been looking into suspected cyber crime involving computer systems used in the elections in two or more US states.
The Bureau has fired a warning to other states as it suspects that more intrusions could be around the corner.
Illinois and Arizona officials confirmed that their computer systems were hit by cyber crime in July this year, with data breached on up to 200,000 voters in Illinois.
The intrusions have come after an alleged Russian breach of the Democratic National Committee, which resulted in a leak of thousands of emails detailing election campaign discussions.
The FBI warning has brought to attention concerns over computer systems used in the management of US elections, which could be susceptible to hacking, possibly involving foreign actors.
The warning, reported by Yahoo News, said:
“The FBI is requesting that states contact their Board of Elections and determine if any similar activity to their logs, both inbound and outbound, has been detected.”
An official in the US said that as yet there had been no evidence regarding any information about the databases that were tampered with in the breaches.
Computer systems are often vulnerable today, and it is important that all organisations protect themselves as much as feasibly possible. One of the wisest moves any organisation can make is to create cyber security positions in order to ensure that the necessary expertise is in house. Computer systems are great for managing information, but should that information be lost, the results could be catastrophic.
