'Snapshot' warning on bot program

An information security firm has uncovered a spambot which takes screenshots of victims’ computers, those in information security jobs will be concerned to learn.

Writing on its research blog, SecureWorks looked at files from the Ozdok command centre, a common autonomous software robot (botnet).

It found the botnet was collecting screenshots from unsuspecting victims’ screens, which were then stored on a central server.

SecureWorks says this is the first time it has seen botnets behave in such a way.

The risks depend on whatever the malicious software happens to stumble upon.

Often, the screenshots simply show computer users accessing their desk tops, browsing social networking sites or reading their emails.

But SecureWorks suggests that a possible purpose of taking screenshots is to groom victims "for financial credentials or intellectual property".

Elsewhere, the spread of the Downadup worm has continued, with the number of computers infected estimated at around 15 million.

Vital IT systems at hospitals, councils and even the Ministry of Defence have all been stricken.
