Businesses that make data available to the U.S. Government to assist with cyber security defence will be offered increased protection in consumer lawsuits.
This is thanks to a new rule that is part of a huge federal bill, and was recently announced in Congress.
The new proposal, which has received much support from U.S. businesses, is the first key policy response by Congress to the level of cyber attacks that have affected Sony Pictures, JPMorgan Chase, Home Depot, and Target, in addition to a number of government agencies.
Congress has seen its share of failures when it comes to data-sharing laws, due to supporters of privacy expressing concerns regarding increased surveillance of citizens by providing National Security with further data.
The House is expected to cast its votes on the bill this. If it is approved, it would wait to receive the thumbs up from the Senate.
The new proposal would see businesses receive increased protection from lawsuits relating to privacy if those businesses cooperate by sharing data regarding cyber threats. They would provide the data to the Government through the Department of Homeland Security. The information would include routing information and IP addresses that supporters of the bill believe could be beneficial in identifying or thwarting computer intrusions.
The proposed bill shows how seriously certain members of the U.S. Government are taking the issue of cyber security. It is a matter not just for U.S. Businesses, but also for firms in the UK to focus on. No matter what government support is offered, they need to be making more cyber security jobs available to those in a position to help them.
