Cyber security startup businesses can now apply for a cyber innovation centre to receive £50m over a five-year period, in line with the government’s £1.8 million National Cyber Security Programme.
The government has launched an innovation collaboration with tech start-up firms designed to develop world-leading, cutting-edge cyber technology.
The new facility will accelerate the path for new businesses to enter cyber security, a sector that contributed £1.8bn to the economy in the UK last year.
Matt Hancock, culture and digital minister, said:
“We are making progress in our ambitious programme to support innovation in cyber security, grow the UK’s thriving sector, and protect Britain from cyber attacks and threats.
“Our two new Cyber Innovation Centres will bring together government, academic and business expertise, and will be invaluable in helping support startup companies and develop world-class cyber technology.”
The initiative will assist startups in improving and scaling their first sales, accelerate business development with partners, and help to find third-party finance.
The firms will receive a Wayra UK grant and space in which to work. They will also have the chance to learn best cyber practice first-hand and achieve Cyber Essential accreditation.
Cyber security is being granted a lot of attention at the moment due to a high number of breaches and an increasing sophistication among cyber criminals. Businesses in the UK can do more to combat that sophistication by creating cyber security positions in order to possess the necessary skills on-site should they be needed.
