Michael Fallon, UK’s Defence Secretary, has announced that the government will be investing over £40m to establish a new cyber security operations centre (CSOC), strengthening the UK’s cyber defence.
The facility will be based at a Ministry of Defence (MoD) centre in Corsham. A number of MoD units are based in the region.
The CSOC investment is in line with the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). It expects a government investment of £1.9bn within five years in a bid to defend the country against cyber threats and attacks.
Fallon said:
“Britain is a world leader in cyber security, but with growing threats, this new operations centre will ensure that our armed forces continue to operate securely.
“Our increasing defence budget means that we can stay ahead of our adversaries in cyberspace while also investing in conventional capabilities.”
Experts will be plying their trade at CSOC to safeguard the UK’s cyber sphere from threats and allowing the safe operation of defence networks.
The system will be sharing security challenges with other government departments, industry partners, and allies.
CSOC will act as a cyber hub for UK’s networks. It will be in operation every hour of every day to in order to closely assess networks, identify attacks and carry out any necessary actions.
The government is clearly responding to the growing number of cyber threats in recent times. SMEs need to be following suit by making cyber security jobs available to those capable of defending their firm.
