Recently published research has demonstrated that Germany and the UK are coming under more Advanced Persistent Attacks (ATPs) than any other countries in Europe.
The FireEye H1-2014 EMEA Advanced Threat Report shows that malware-advanced targeted attacks in particular had, as of June, increased by close to 100% in 2014.
FireEye claims that the United Kingdom is the country targeted the most, attracting 17% of attacks, with Germany lying second at 12%. Energy, telecommunications, financial services, and government are the sectors targeted the most. These categories account for over 50% of APT detections.
Richard Turner, FireEye’s EMEA VP, explained that businesses and government need to accept that they will have to contend with advanced attacks in today’s climate.
He commented:
“By preparing an effective defensive strategy, organisations can avoid the risk of sitting on the sidelines as their data and intellectual property find their way to competitors, adversaries or hacktivists.”
Encode UK’s sales director, Phil Robins, said that the problem is not whether an attack can be prevented; the issue, he said, is how to spot the signs of a pending attack and contain it when it does arrive.
Recognising such a threat is not an easy task and calls for the skills of a member of staff who is experienced in cyber security. Today’s businesses would be wise to ensure they post and fill information security vacancies in order to have people in place who are capable of protecting company data and systems.
