A large number of websites built with the WordPress platform have been victims of malware originating from a domain in Russia, which took advantage of a flaw discovered months ago.
Over 100,000 websites globally have been affected by the malware, which is known as ‘SoakSoak’ and is infecting WordPress sites through a flaw in a plugin called WordPress Slider Revolution, an add-on that implements slideshow features.
Daniel Cid, the CTO from security vendor Sucuri, confirmed that not only have 100,000 websites been affected, but the number is also increasing.
Cid posted recently on his blog:
“We disclosed a serious vulnerability with RevSlider a few months ago. It seems that many webmasters have either not heard of or did not take seriously the vulnerability.
“The biggest issue is that RevSlider is a premium plugin, it’s not something everyone can easily upgrade and that in itself becomes a disaster for [website owners].”
WordPress has become increasingly popular over the years, mostly due to the fact that it’s free and is an accessible content management system for business owners and staff alike. However, it is constantly having to update itself, partly due to security issues. For businesses not to be affected by such flaws, they need to ensure that they have staff capable of recognising and patching such flaws as those found in the slideshow plugin.
By opening and filling cyber security jobs, businesses are enabling themselves to take the action that is evidently necessary.
