US and British police may be getting closer to tracking down the cyber criminal group that claimed to hack Microsoft and Sony games networks at Christmas, as well as aiding the recent Sony Pictures hack and developing a new DDoS attack resource.
A man based in Twickenham, aged 22, has been arrested and is suspected of being a member of the infamous Lizard Squad.
Just a few days earlier, the group confessed to being responsible for playing a role in the Sony Pictures breach, now believed to have been carried out by North Korea.
The group also developed an attack tool, and claimed that the disruption on games networks was part of a ploy to market it.
Vinnie Omari, who the national media believe to be a spokesman for Lizard Squad, has reportedly been arrested after the SEROCU (South East Regional Organised Crime Unit) raided his home.
A report in The Washington Post stated:
“A person identifying himself as a Lizard Squad administrator said the group provided a number of Sony employee logins to Guardians of Peace, the organisation that allegedly broke into Sony’s network and prompted the film studio to initially withdraw ‘The Interview’ from release.”
Hacking groups are popping up frequently and it will take a concerted effort by government agencies and businesses alike to keep up with new methods of thwarting cyber attacks. By ensuring that cyber security jobs are filled with talented personnel, UK firms will be taking significant measures towards safeguarding their data. The Government still has a large hand to play, however.
