A film about GCHQ and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, called Citizenfour, was the subject of a recent even in London, but there is still doubt over whether Snowden really got his point across to the UK regarding government surveillance and privacy.
Since he offered leaks on surveillance programmes, Snowden has been equally praised and criticised, initially in The Guardian, going back to April 2013. However, praise was delivered in spades at the F-Secure party for privacy at the London 44CON conference.
The conference was organised partly to herald Snowden and Citizenfour, a film directed and produced by Laura Poitras, which also offered cameos by Ewen MacAskill and Glenn Greenwald.
The feature has won an Oscar and a Bafta since its release in October 2014.
Christian Fredrikson, CEO of F-Secure, along with UK managing director Allen Scott, started the event by talking about how the film’s success excited them.
Scott commented:
“Whatever your opinion of him is, if he’s a villain or a hero, you’ve got to admit that what he did was extremely brave. Think about yourself, would you be able to do [the] same?”
It may be that many business owners prefer to live in ignorance. If a security disaster should strike their firm, however, they may rue the day they decided to ignore the warnings from Snowden and the makers of Citizenfour. Savvier firms will conduct regular reviews of their IT security recruitment policies – and that’s not such a bad thing.
