An NSS Labs report has claimed that the common criticisms of standard antivirus (AV) software – which is often accused of missing the most recent security threats – is unfair. It asserts that modem security software utilises more than one methodology to identify various categories of attacks.
The analysis, titled ‘From Brain to Flame: Myths, Facts, and the Future’, was penned by Randy Abrams, NSS Labs’ research director. It follows in the wake of a number of quantitative yet critical reports from the firm, which has evaluated various introductory and mid-level AV packages on the market.
The company said that although it is accurate that purely signature-style AV scanners no longer exist, the AV sector is making more and more progress, predicting the future based on previous trends.
Abrams said in his report:
“The AV industry has evolved beyond static signature technology.”
Further, he said that the industry has significant remediation experience, with technology developing organically.
Previous indicators have identified a likelihood that End Point Protection vendors will be offering Breach Detection System products sooner rather than later. With such a heavy emphasis on technology, the importance of staff with the necessary technical know-how to utilise it cannot be underestimated. Therefore, those looking for cyber security jobs need to ensure that they keep abreast of the most recent trends and sharpen their skill set to suit.
