A new Cyber Aptitude Assessment has been launched by the SANS Institute in an effort to increase skill levels in IT security.
The test allows those with an interest in web security to audit their current skills. The test will uncover the best performers in the UK, who will then receive help in getting into IT security careers.
SANS trainers and experts have created the test in order to evaluate the capabilities and skills that have the biggest impact in being successful in today’s cyber security environment.
Those who take the test and show enough potential to assume both industry and government positions will receive scholarship offers for the SANS Cyber Academy. The eight-week bootcamp provides world-class IT security training.
The web-based test comprises approximately 40 questions over 45 minutes.
Managing director for SANS UK, Stephen Jones, has explained:
“This is not a silver bullet and must be viewed alongside other important skills initiatives, but it will play a part closing the skills gap. Our intention is to continually seek out the best raw talent, provide them with intensive SANS training and then make those skilled individuals available to UK enterprises and government.”
Such training initiatives as the SANS test can only help the future of cyber security in the UK. SMEs too need to be looking at the benefits of hiring security professionals. They are likely to be acknowledging the importance of IT security recruitment, in light of recent breaches making the headlines. That can only be a good thing for them – and certainly for any customers whose data they hold.
