Hackers are zoning in on government organisations, which means that a greater degree of emphasis is needed on robust cyber security, says a recent report by the Digital Government Security Forum and Intel Security.
The report said that a new mindset is needed, as at the moment the focus is on incident response. It suggested that a more proactive “continuous detection and response” to cyber attacks should be implemented.
Titled ‘The future of information security’, the report claimed that a more rapid response is needed in responding to cyber attacks in light of more sophisticated cyber crime methods being employed.
The report said:
“At present, information security tends to be very fragmented as it has been developed and implemented on a tactical basis reacting to new developments and changes in the type of threats.
“As a result, it is generally silo-based and this creates opportunities for threat actors to exploit gaps and overlaps between the silos.”
The report asserts that there is a need for more functional capabilities. It names a number of number of required components to achieve this, which include the appropriate intelligence and tools, the right culture and people in place, and an awareness of any contextual issues.
It is easier than ever for SMEs to implement improvements in their company as far as cyber security practice is concerned. There are more advanced tools available and more trained cyber professionals to hire. Businesses just need to be more cyber savvy and make cyber security jobs open to experts in order to protect their firm.
