A new cyber security innovation centre should open in 2018 and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have commissioned a competition to develop and design the centre with the announcement of the project.
The latest in a series of initiatives coming out of parliament; the innovation centre will work as part of the government’s commitment to increase cyber security awareness. Innovative start-ups and industry experts will have the chance to work closely with larger organisations to improve on product design and processes relating to cyber security.
With £14.5 million secured in funding, the innovation centre joins the new National Cyber Security Centre based in London as the latest in a suite of projects designed to facilitate the development of new technologies that will increase protection against cyber attacks.
Minister for Digital Matt Hancock said in a speech:
“Our investment in a new cyber innovation centre will not only cement the city’s position as a world leader but also boost the whole country by giving UK firms access to the latest cyber technology and allowing start-ups to get the support they need to develop”
2017 has already seen some prolific cyber attacks, and the UK government is wise to respond with a plan that ensures new solutions that are being developed hit the actual needs of the UK economy.
In an era where organisations are struggling to quantify the level of investment into solutions they need to make in order to mitigate cyber risk, or rather, correctly estimate the financial impact of sustaining a large scale attack – the development of effective cyber solutions is paramount in appeasing boardroom fear and uncertainty.
The cyber security innovation centre will be based in London and falls under the remit of the £1.9 billion pledged to be invested in UK based cyber security initiatives by the government between 2016- 2021.
