The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of the GCHQ, has officially been launched. The centre is essentially a means for the UK government to provide expert advice on how to combat cyber threats.
The facility will be located near London Victoria station in the shopping mall and Nova office, despite the original announcement that it would be situated at GCHQ in Cheltenham. It will still have a presence there, however.
While the centre will emphasise defensive work, it will also function in an offensive capacity, drawing on features developed by the Ministry of Defence and GCHQ.
The Evening Standard reported that the NCSC plans to employ 700 employees, over 50% of whom will be situated at the new premises later in the year and into 2017. There will be specialist departments in telecoms, energy, security services and intelligence, Whitehall, and the City, as well as other sectors of the critical national infrastructure.
Matthew Hancock Paymaster General and Cabinet Office Minister, said:
“In establishing the National Cyber Security Centre, we are creating a body devoted to cyber-security, and this will transform the UK’s approach to an issue that affects us all.
“This important work with the Bank of England is paramount to ensuring that businesses of all shapes and sizes understand the threats and what they can do to mitigate them.”
The centre is good news for national cyber security, but there needs to be more action taken in the world of commerce. Businesses need to be creating more cyber security positions in order to defend against the latest threats.
