Nokia’s software architecture team has joined forces with F-Secure, the security vendor, in a bid to combat a surge in mobile malware.
The research division of Alcatel Lucent Kindsight Security Labs has reported an increase of mobile malware, with 11.6m devices affected across the globe at some point in the final quarter of 2013. The document further states that actual infections increased by 20% last year.
The joint venture between Nokia Solutions & Networks and F-Secure will be of benefit to both tablet and handset vendors in developing integrated security and anti-malware product software. This is an exciting challenge for the teams at both companies, as well as those seeking information security jobs at such blue chip organisations.
Neither firm has given away details of plans made for the joint venture, but it is expected that there will be a form of on-device firmware security.
Kevin McNamee, Kindsight Security Labs’ director, explained:
“Not only is Android the largest smartphone market, unlike the iPhone and Blackberry, it allows apps to be loaded from third party sites. This provides cybercriminals with an un-policed mechanism to distribute their malware which can easily evade detection by device-based anti-virus.”
Kindsight’s research found that last year saw the advent of mobile spyware turning infected tablets and smartphones into cyber-espionage devices. The report said that the devices enable hackers to download personal information and contact lists remotely, as well as track locations, take pictures, record conversations and receive and send messages.
