There is an increase in cyber-extortion and ransomware, with hackers showing more of a willingness to apply aggressive tactics, according to a new report.
The M-Trends report from cyber security firm FireEye Mandiant Consulting revealed a 2015 median of 146 days that attackers remained on their target’s network before they were discovered. That figure has fallen from 2014, where it stood at 205 days.
The study said that the most intriguing trend of 2015 was a rise in the number of disruptive attacks that it responded to. A disruptive attack can include any that holds a firm through such methods as stealing data before making threats to release it, damaging systems, or deleting data, or modifying vital business information.
The report added:
“These attacks resulted in a public release of confidential data and, consequently, embarrassment and reputational damage. In some cases, companies lost the capability to function as a business due to the crippling loss of critical systems. Side effects included executive resignations, costly ransoms, and expensive system rebuilds.”
It went on to say that there is likely to be a rising trend in disruptive attacks due to the low cost and high impact.
Disruptive cyber attacks are just one of the categories of cyber crime that has been prominent in cyber news over the past few years, with a number of high-profile cases making headlines. That is precisely why it is more important than ever for UK SMEs to fill cyber security jobs with the very best cyber professionals they can afford.
