Hackers who claim to have close ties to ISIS managed to take a FRENCH television station offline for a number of hours recently, as well as defacing TV5Monde’s social media presence.
Hackers who say they represent CyberCaliphate – a group that has hacked Newsweek in the past, as well infiltrated US CENTCOM’s social media profiles – took over the network and its Facebook account, and uploaded pictures they claimed were the CVs and IDs of soldiers’ relatives.
One of the messages from the hackers left on the station’s Facebook page read:
“The CyberCaliphate continues its cyber-jihad against the enemies of Islamic State. Soldiers of France, stay away from the Islamic State! You have the chance to save your families, take advantage of it.”
Hackers also involved the President of France, Francois Hollande, saying that he made a mistake with the stance he has taken against ISIS. France is one of the countries in a global coalition engaging in airstrikes on Syria and Iraq in a bid to hit ISIS targets.
Although it remains unclear as to how any compromise took place, suggestions have been made that hackers managed to log in with privileged account details and assume control over the server. They then proceeded to change passwords of normal administrators and ceased services.
TV5Monde paid a steep price for its country’s allegiance, but managed to recover. For other companies, the outcome could have been more drastic. Businesses need to ensure that cyber security jobs are filled with the best people for the job.
