A photograph featuring founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has appeared with tape appearing to cover the microphone and webcam on his MacBook Pro.
The photograph appeared on Instagram and reached 500 million of the social media website’s users.
Facebook has not disclosed commentary requests for the photo, but it does show that even such a tech guru as Zuckerberg remains cautious when it comes to cyber crime.
Zuckerberg may be the most high-profile individual to support this idea, but according to Edward Snowden, he is not the very first to do so. Snowden said that the GCHQ was running a program by the name of ‘Optic Nerve’, which employed Yahoo! Online chats that captured millions of photos from users across the globe. FBI Director James Comey also says he applies tape across his webcam.
Online security professional Graham Cluley said:
“I think Zuckerberg is sensible to take these precautions. As well as intelligence agencies and conventional online criminals who might be interested in targeting his billions, there are no doubt plenty of mischievous hackers who would find it amusing to spy upon such a high-profile figure.”
If Zuckerberg is showing such caution, it indicates the threats to online privacy that exist with the ability to both individuals and organisations. Businesses, especially, have an obligation to constantly monitor the security of their systems. That is why it is so important that they constantly assess their IT recruitment strategy to ensure they have the right personnel on board.
