The EU’s attempt to toughen up security of data with its cyber security proposal will now integrate digital platforms.
The proposal would mean that Facebook, Amazon and Google may have to comply with new rules, which focus in particular on breach and risk management reporting criteria.
The legislation was first proposed by the EU in July of 2012. Going by the name of ‘Network and Information Security Directive’, the rules at first were targeting purely critical directives, including finance, transport, and energy.
Back then, the EU said:
“As far as network and information systems are concerned, the aim would be to enhance preparedness, strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure as well as to foster a cyber security culture in the EU.”
The legislation, however, has not been without criticism since it was first proposed. It has also been the focus of a harsh debate that saw member states express different opinions on the inclusion of digital platforms in the law.
This means that companies such as Google, Amazon and Facebook could be legally obliged to report more serious breaches, according to one document witnessed by Reuters.
Legislation at this level highlights the seriousness of cyber security in today’s technology climate. It is an area, however, that needs addressing on every level, and that includes UK SMEs. IT security recruitment needs to be a higher priority for businesses should they wish to avoid falling foul of the latest cybercrimes doing the rounds.
