A free web-based cyber security course for the accountancy and legal sectors has been announced by the minister for the digital economy, Ed Vaizey.
Accountancy and legal firms will be given access to online security training to help professionals in avoiding cyber attacks.
The aim is for accountants and lawyers to be in a position where they can advise clients on best practices for cyber security.
Vaizey said that sensitive data held by the accountancy and legal sectors makes them susceptible to being targeted by attackers.
The minister added:
“The new course we are launching today makes cyber security part of the day job for lawyers and accountants. It provides members of both professions with tailored and relevant guidance on how they can better protect themselves and their clients from cyber threats.”
The course will include a diverse range of topics, including the protection of digital information, avoidance of data breaches in the workplace, and prevention of attacks.
The training will be funded by the government’s £860m National Cyber Security Programme, a scheme designed to help the UK rank among the safest countries for online trading.
How much of an effect the course will have remains to be seen. There are professionals trained to fill cyber security jobs, and they will likely be trained to a higher level than participants of the latest government initiative. They are also not limited to the accountancy and legal sectors, and recent threats have shown that all sectors are at risk.
