Cyber security the headline at Worcestershire business event
An IT expert based in Worcestershire recently delivered a presentation to local firms on what to expect from technology in business and the importance of cyber security at a breakfast event at FinditinWorcestershire.
At ‘The Future of Business and Technology’ event, OGL Computer’s technical director, Paul Colwell, spoke to members to help them determine whether their technology strategy is adequate for the modern business climate.
Colwell spoke about how the cloud and the internet are transforming how we use data. He said:
“Through the cloud, more than 200 million emails are sent every 60 seconds and OGL’s Data Centre stores one million gigabytes of data.
“By 2020, it has been estimated that businesses will allocate significantly more of their IT budget to the cloud than traditional IT services.”
Colwell also spoke about cyber security, telling the audience that the National Crime Agency has stated that cyber crime is now the UK’s main criminal activity, ahead of traditional crime. Research has indicated that 74% of firms will experience a security breach this year, with £35,000 being the average cost to a business.
He added that many small businesses believe that their firm is not large enough to be enticing to cyber criminals.
Firms need to be better prepared to face a breach, whether this year or in 2017. This starts with creating IT security jobs and attracting the best new talent to their organisation. The sooner they add such talent, the greater the odds that they will avoid a breach.
