A global conference week held in Edinburgh this month was aimed at encouraging businesses to tap into their darker side in the war on cyber crime.
More than 350 attendees from Europol, Police Scotland, and a number of academia and cyber security firms gathered at Napier University’s Cyber Academy for the Big Data in Cyber Security conference.
Businesses are being forced to confront an increasing number of threats from cyber criminals who employ hacking software in the theft of cash, intellectual property, and data. Many larger firms are responding with event management and information security software. The event provided expertise and insights on facing such security challenges.
Speakers at the conference included Hewlett Packard Enterprise security professional Tim Grieveson and Police Scotland’s Detective Inspector Eamonn Keane.
Grieveson said:
“In order to protect from the bad guys, organisations need to start viewing attackers as not just adversaries, but competitors in the market.
“One of the best methods of doing this is to understand how they think, what techniques they use and what vulnerabilities they typically exploit to steal critical business assets.”
Hopefully, attendees learned from the conference and will go back to their organisation and ensure that tighter security protocols are implemented. IT security management has long been a subject of too little focus in business, and this is a fact that cyber criminals have exploited time and again. The aim of such conferences is to ensure that businesses take more responsibility in the fight against cyber crime.
