More than 2.5m cyber crime incidents were reported within the past 12 months, predicts the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The ONS has released its first statistical report on computer misuse, such as hacking, in its latest Crime Survey.
The body said that the most frequent cyber crime categorised under the Computer Misuse Act was malware. The report stated:
“The most common incident where the victim’s computer or other internet-enabled device was infected by a virus,”
The report was released soon after McAfee Labs and Intel Security said that credit cards are being sold by hackers from just $5.
The number of people suffering from cyber crime incidents is 10% of the English and Welsh population. Experts have said, however, that the actual figure is much higher.
The numbers came from dual sources: The Crime Survey of England and Wales, based on how many people have reported a crime, and police figures, which are based on the number of crime reports made.
Cyber security senior manager for KPMG, Louise Pordage, said:
“While the figures released today may appear high, I am certain that cyber crime remains one of the most under reported areas in our crime statistics.”
The report shows that cyber crime remains a significant issue in the UK. Businesses especially need to be alert to any threats, such as hacking or malware. The wisest move they could make would be to post cyber security jobs in order to ensure that they are in the best possible position to prevent such attacks.
