A new hub centred around cyber crime will be formed in Scotland in an effort to combat criminal activity online, with the emphasis placed on those planning to harm key elements of the nation’s infrastructure.
Edinburgh’s facility will have specialists on hand to conduct forensic digital probes of hardware to aid police with their investigations.
The facility will see a collaboration of units based in Edinburgh, Falkirk and Glenrothes in a bid to assist Scottish police in handling the increasing call for digital forensic services.
Digital forensics has been a conversation topic of late due to a skills gap, and Europol has just announced plans for a conference to be held on the topic.
The new hub has been given the thumbs up by the Scottish Police Authority, which has also invested £1.5m in the project.
Iain Livingstone, who heads Crime and Operational Support, commented:
“Very few investigations today do not have a digital aspect to them – the darker side of the web is all too evident for us to see on a daily basis, whether it relates to the sharing of illegal images of children, online grooming, radicalisation, orchestrating serious organised crime or cyber-bullying.”
The fact that cyber security has held such a prominent place in the minds of governments lately shows what a danger the situation has become. Businesses also need to take a long, hard look at their IT security recruitment policies and ask themselves if they are doing enough. Just like Scotland, they may decide that they need to do more which, in the long run, can only be a good thing.
