The vast majority (85%) of CIOs are not doing enough when it comes to tracing the source of cyber threats. This is in spite of a similar figure saying that they feel the pressure to prevent, identify, and combat security attacks.
Endpoint security firm Carbon Black conducted a report which revealed that 28% of respondents (200) are unconcerned with the time it takes to find out what caused the breach, revealing a worrying discrepancy between the expectations of dealing with threats/attacks, and the reality of what takes place.
Carbon Black head security strategist Ben Johnson feels that a number of the conclusions are confusing to read, which raises a point that CIOs may be unable to understand the workings of their own security infrastructure.
He said:
“When you look at these results, something really doesn’t add up. On the one hand, companies are operating from a reactive security posture and tending to symptoms, rather than causes. Yet they still believe they can detect threats much faster than the industry average, even though they are not actively seeking them out.”
CIOs are putting their company, and most notably its data, at risk by failing to understand the urgency that needs to be applied to cyber threats. One of the ways to counter their own understanding is to ensure that they have the necessary personnel on board that can make it clearer to them. This is what makes IT security jobs so pivotal in today’s workplace.
