One in four office workers oblivious to phishing

New research has revealed that almost 25% office workers in the UK are ignorant when it comes to phishing – one of the most dangerous forms of cyber threats.

According to the study, close to 15 per cent are unaware of what the term even means. A further statistic, which is also concerning, is that close to 20 per cent of businesses in the UK fail to offer any training to help to improve awareness.

With knowledge limited outside those in cyber security jobs, this is a genuine threat for a large number of businesses in the country.

One Poll surveyed around 1,000 people for security awareness firm PhishMe, discovering that close to nine per cent believed that phishing was a form of social media.

Amar Singh, who is the UK Security Advisory Group chair at ISACA, a cyber security organisation, said:

“Phishing and spear-phishing (targeted phishing) will continue to remain a serious threat and as more people embrace smart devices, this threat and its impact is only going to increase.”

“A simple message, like “think before you click” or “think before you share” could save an organisation an embarrassing data leak and, consequently, its brand reputation.”

Singh further explained how there are a large number of businesses that are in a position to improve the situation just by educating their workforce on the basics of security. This, he feels, would be of benefit both to the employee and the organisation as a whole.
