Scotland is Europe’s first nation to offer cyber security qualifications as a part of a school curriculum.
The new award has been developed by The Scottish Qualifications Authority in order to aid pupils in recognising, understanding, and dealing with cyber threats faced by both individuals and businesses in their daily lives.
Dr. Gill Stewart, qualifications director, said that courses would include ethical hacking, digital forensics, and data security, and would potentially act as a gateway to a future career in cyber security.
She said that with an expected 50 billion devices to be connected online within a five year period, along with an anticipated increase in the activity rate and the volume of available data online, there will also be more opportunities for cyber criminals to capitalise.
She added:
“The challenge facing governments, businesses and individuals in being secure online couldn’t be greater and to face these challenges more people need to be trained, recruited and working in cyber security roles.
“The awards have been developed in partnership with industry experts to capture the interest of learners and provide an excellent starting point”
Minister for Youth Employment Annabelle Ewing said that skills and education in cyber security are among the primary elements of establishing a nation that is cyber resilient, as well as fulfilling both Scottish and global demand for IT security professionals.
One day, these pupils may be applying for IT security jobs and will be defending their companies from the expected rise in cyber crime.
