With the rate of growth for jobs in cyber security at 28% from 2016-2026, the demand for new professionals in this field is considerably higher than the demand in other fields.

This represents a massive opportunity for anyone with an interest in computer sciences or technology in general, but only if you can demonstrate your competence. Fortunately, it’s easy to verify your skills and qualifications with certifications.

If you’re interested in getting started in a career in cyber security, here are the top three certifications that will help you get your foot in the door.

Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Security Fundamentals

If you’re looking for a truly entry-level certification, this is it. There is absolutely no previous experience required and the certification appeals to college and university students hoping to make a head-start on their career. Of course, that means it’s also perfect for those switching careers later in life.

The exam tests knowledge of core security principles and the basics of operating systems, network, and software security.

CompTIA Security+

This is arguably the most well-known entry level certification, but it does require some relevant experience to pass. (See #1 on this list.) The course covers topics including network security, threats and vulnerabilities, access controls, cryptography, risk management principles, and application, host, and data security and emphasises hands-on practical skills and problem solving. With this certification, you could land a job as a systems administrator, network engineer, or information security analyst to name a few.

Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP)

Instead of testing your knowledge of general principles, the OSCP is meant to test and verify your knowledge of risks and vulnerabilities. This, of course, is vital in any cyber security position where cyber criminals are continuously trying to find new ways to attack IT infrastructure. The 24-hour test also gives you access to real hacking tools which will help build your knowledge base and give you hands-on experience.

While these are the most in-demand certifications, different jobs and different companies require and prefer different skills. What’s more, these qualifications are only a launching point.
