NCC Group is playing its part in filling in the gap in cyber skills.
It will be asking UK graduates and students to take on the cyber security problems that both consumers and businesses are facing. The Cyber 10K challenge winner will be awarded £10,000, along with expert advice provided by the company, in order to develop its very own cyber security solution.
The fundamental plan is to make a career in cyber security appealing to both recent graduates and students.
Approximately 40,000 professionals are working in the sector, but certification and security experts at (ISC)² predict that it will see a shortage of 1.5mn by the year 2020 as a result of an increasing demand outweighing employable graduates.
NCC Group director of trust Paul Vlissidis said that there seems to be a constant stream of news on the digital skills shortage, and that security is the industry that is highlighted more than any other.
He added:
“Ensuring we produce enough security engineers as a country is paramount. To do that we need to make sure those that do choose cyber security as a career path are engaged with industry as soon as possible and have the opportunity to develop their ideas.”
Whether the competition has the desired effect remains to be seen, but there is clearly far more to be done to combat the growing skills shortage. Businesses need to be looking at their I.T. security recruitment strategy and assessing whether they need to add personnel before the skills gap widens even further.
