July saw the government launch its Cyber Demonstration Centre, which provides small and medium-sized businesses an opportunity to showcase their latest in cyber security offerings.
The centre, which resides in a Westminster business suite, features three monitors and video conferencing equipment. The technology can be used with older versions, and can also be linked up with smartphones and laptops in real time.
The centre receives part of its funding from UK Trade and Investment and the Cabinet Office, and may help the cyber sector to expand its export opportunities.
Cyber ambassador for the UK, Conrad Prince, told v3.co.uk that the plan is to offer small businesses the same opportunities that larger companies have to demonstrate their technology.
He said that UK firms, SMEs in particular, will be able to access potential markets and customers that they would otherwise find difficult to reach.
Prince added:
“I am engaging at a senior government-to-government level in certain key markets where the British government can add value by engaging in senior discussions around cyber security and looking for opportunities to put together British companies with relevant overseas governments.”
The centre was launched at a time when more innovative security products are needed, with cyber security a growing concern in the modern climate. The products on their own aren’t enough to combat the issue, however. Small and medium businesses need to open up cyber security jobs to professionals who know not only how to use the products, but also have the ability recognise when systems are being attacked. In this way, they can save the company they work for from experiencing any long-term damage.
