Businesses need to be more aware when it comes to information security threats if they wish to avoid breaches of company security, delegates were told by law enforcement personnel at this year’s Infosecurity Europe.
The National Cyber Crime Unit’s (NCCU) deputy head, Lee Miles, said:
“While security technology will help, a contemporary and dynamic awareness of real-world risks and threats is very important.”
The NCCU is monitoring around 320 cyber crime forums to stay ahead of criminal goings-on.
For this very reason, businesses need to play a larger role in cyber intelligence forums in their respective industries, said Michael Driscoll, an FBI assistant legal attaché to London’s US Embassy.
He said:
“There is no longer the need to have technical knowledge. The availability of attack tools and services in criminals’ forums means it is all too easy to become a cyber criminal for financial gain.”
He continued to say that should information not be shared among businesses in the very same industry, methods of digital crime will go on being successful.
Miles added that the Cyber Information Sharing Partnership is a great method of ensuring that intelligence is shared, promoting an education in real-world threats.
It is essential, in this day and age, for employers to have more of an awareness of risks to their data, but they also need to ensure that their cyber staff are acutely aware of what is going on – and more importantly, that they have the skills required to deal with potential threats. They may need to post cyber security jobs to guarantee that the necessary skills are present in-house.
