SSDs will increase in numbers
25/05/2010
Between now and 2015, the number of solid state drives (SSDs) in use by the enterprise sector will grow at an annual rate of 90 per cent, new research has revealed.
The market for flash SSDs, which can be used for storage and availability, is booming, according to the report from Objective Analysis.
According to Jim Handy, an analyst with the company, which offers third-party independent market research and data for the semiconductor industry, SSDs "bring a moderate improvement in battery life, faster boot times, and a significantly more rugged form of mass storage".
"The SSD can be easily removed from [a] shattered PC and placed into a new PC," because the devices are so rugged, he said.
This means that people are not out-of-action in the workplace for long periods of time and also ensures data protection is still maintained.
There is going to be an increasing need for power-efficient, rugged storage devices as the total amount of digital information created and replicated in the world is expected to grow to more than 35 trillion gigabytes annually by 2020, according to data from the International Data Corporation.
