Firms should aim to 'develop data quality culture'

Companies that adopt data quality into their ethos will be able to manage data-related issues instinctively in the future, it has been suggested.
Danette McGilvray, president of Granite Falls Consulting, believes that one of the best ways to avoid data quality problems is to weave responsibility for data quality into the roles of all workers, SearchDataManagement.com reported last week.
Dylan Jones, founder and editor of online data community resource firm Data Quality Pro, said: "Over time, typically several years, you aim to develop a data quality culture."
At the moment in the UK, one of the key issues for organisations is for them to address data protection in order to improve their information security.
New rules were introduced under the Data Protection Act earlier this year, fining companies in breach of aspects of the act either accidentally or deliberately.
Mr Jones explained that if areas where data quality improvements can be made are identified in every department within the organisation, the practice then "becomes second nature at every level".
