UC security risks outlined by new report
21 July 2008
Unified communications (UC) systems left open by companies are creating a security risk, it has been claimed.
According to research conducted by Light Reading's Voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) Services Insider, improper use of security features is a major cause for concern, reports VNU Net.
Denise Culver, a research analyst at Light Reading, said vendors were putting technologies in place to provide protection from "existing and impending threats".
She added: "But the likelihood of a major and successful attack on UC systems is growing for one simple reason: end user failure to implement security techniques properly.
"Simple measures such as encryption are not used by customers, even though their UC platforms enable such protection.
"This leaves vendors to wonder what kind of disaster must occur before enterprises realise the need for implementing the security measures on their UC platforms."
Enterprise users were, according to the report, the most "glaring point of vulnerability" where possible UC security breaches were concerned.
UC refers to multimedia messaging functions such as email, instant messaging, VoIP, voice mail and fax.
