A fresh series of data breaches have been acknowledged by NHS organisations, it has emerged.

According to Pulse, documents have been uncovered which reveal that there have been 58 reported security breaches within the past year, which may be of interest to those looking for data security jobs.

These incidents, which were reported as part of the Department of Health's security review, include patient records left vulnerable due to lost memory sticks, stolen laptops, documents lost in the post, faxes sent to the wrong location and documents that were disposed of improperly.

According to Pulse, David Nicholson, chief executive of the NHS, wrote to managers within the health service to emphasise their responsibility for maintining security standards, saying: "Good data security is essential and that is why we place so much emphasis in our guidance on information being held and shared in the most secure ways possible."

In February, a British Medical Association survey found that more than nine out of ten doctors did not feel confident in the government's ability to safeguard patient data.
