Network stacks 'potentially vulnerable'

03 October 2008

Network stacks could be vulnerable to low-bandwidth denial-of-service attacks, according to leading security researchers.

Jack Louis and Robert Lee from vulnerability assessment firm Outpost24 have discovered security flaws while testing large numbers of internet addresses.

SecurityFocus reports they found that network stacks used by most operating systems could become non-responsive.

In news which could impact information security jobs, some target machines "failed to recover" from the denial-of-service attack.

Mr Lee told the site: "It is a serious issue because with a relatively small amount of resources you can negatively impact a target with a large amount of resources.

"This isn't a flood. It is specifically knowing how to tie up a lot of resources for no significant use."

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, told BBC London earlier this week of his vision to make London a "Wi-Fi city".
