M&S enforcement notice dropped after encryption scheme

30 September 2008

Leading retailer Marks & Spencer has had an enforcement notice against it dropped by the information commissioner.

The Information Commissioners Office has made the decision to drop the notice after the retail giant confirmed that every company laptop had been encrypted.

According to Info-Security Magazine, the enforcement notice was issued in January following the theft on an unencrypted laptop which contained personal information on over 26,000 employees.

In a move which boosted information security jobs, M&S encrypted the laptops using software supplied by Ultimaco and completed the operation by the end of July.

Darrel Stein, IT director for M&S, told the site that in total 4,352 laptops had been encrypted.

"Marks & Spencer will continue to ensure that personal data stored on laptops, including those acquired in future, are encrypted," he added.

A recent study by security firm SecureWorks found that the US was the number one country for botnet attacks.

Within Europe, Poland, Russia and Germany were found to be the fifth, seventh and ninth worst offenders respectively.
