Concerns have been raised over the security of voice over IP (VoIP) solutions as the technology becomes increasingly popular among businesses in the US and around the world.

Research carried out recently by In-Stat suggested that while more and more companies are incorporating VoIP into their communications infrastructures, relatively few have implemented effective information risk management strategies.

Even some of the largest organisations quizzed by the research team said that they had not begun to introduce "proactive measures", such as assessing the potential risks prior to new VoIP deployments or carrying out relevant audits ion a regular basis.

"No mechanisms for securing VoIP had more than 50 per cent penetration across all sizes of business," said In-Stat analyst Victoria Fodale.

A trend that could lead to more data security jobs in the UK was highlighted recently by a report from the Information Commissioner's Office that showed an information security is becoming an increasingly significant priority around the country.
