Botnet study finds worst worldwide culprits
29 September 2008
A new study has shown that the US is the number one country in the world for botnet attacks.
Research by security firm SecureWorks found the US was responsible for over 20.6 million attempted attacks so far in 2008.
In information which may affect European information security jobs, Poland, Russia and Germany were found to be the fifth, seventh and ninth worst offenders worldwide, with 153,205, 130,572 and 110,493 attacks respectively.
Hunter King, security researcher for SecureWorks, said the figures "should be a warning" to companies worldwide.
"Not only are they putting their computers and networks at risk by not securing them, but they are actually providing these cyber criminals with a platform from which to compromise other computers," he added.
Leading security firm McAfee has announced it is set to acquire rival firm Secure Computing for $465 million (£258 million) to improve its range of firewall products.
