Malware infects a new web page every five minutes, says a report by IT security provider Sophos released at Infosec 2008 in London this week.

The organisation said that, in the first quarter of 2008, 15,000 web pages were found to be infected every day, which is three times the number detected in 2007, reports IT Pro.

Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos, told the technology news provider that it is not only 'suspect' web pages being targeted and that some are big sites, such as a European football ticket website which was attacked.

Going into more detail, she added: "It doesn't matter whether you have an Apache or Unix system web server. Don't assume that you will be protected even though you're not running Windows."

The news follows reports in Computer Weekly earlier this week that the number of businesses reporting security breaches as part of this year's Information Security Breaches survey has increased to 13 per cent of companies from one per cent last year.
