Virus and malware dangers 'growing on mobile devices'

30 September 2008

There have been over 500 viruses or dangerous malware identified which target mobile phones to date, according to security experts.

According to the San Jose Mercury, viruses, worms, spyware and other dangerous programmes similar to those seen for PC's have been seen on mobile devices.

The newly identified problems, which may result in an increase in information security jobs, are feared to be developed to target GPS features, camera or microphone attachments on phones in the future.

Jan Volzke, head of mobile security for software maker McAfee, told the newspaper that it is easier for hackers "to make money on the PC than on the mobile side".

"Whenever you create openness, that's good for innovation. But people need to understand that (malicious) hacks are also innovations," he added.

McAfee recently announced it acquisition of Secure Computing for a cost of $465 million (£258 million), which it hopes will help extend its range of firewall products.
