While UK companies have improved technology for handling security issues, it has become more complicated and many employees do not understand how it works, according to new research.

A BT study ahead of Infosecurity 2008 this week found that three-quarters of British employees were not aware of or did not understand their company's security provisions, reports IT Pro.

Ray Stanton, global head of BT's business continuity, said: "As the profile of information security has increased in recent years, so businesses have become more adept at addressing strategic issues like risk management, outsourcing and security auditing."

However, he went onto say that despite this, many companies had forgotten about security fundamentals and it was time for businesses and the security industry to "go back to basics".

The news follows a report last week on vnunet.com in which IT security firm Finjan pointed out that the voluntary UK Banking Code places the responsibility for securing personal information on the customers of banks.
