The National Health Service has moved ensure confidential patient and staff data held electronically within the organisation is protected.
With the NHS aiming to transfer all confidential patient records onto electronic file, news that IT security provisions such as encryption and port control services are to be used should help ease data security and information risk management concerns.
IT services company McAfee is set to provide the technology, which will be used on all appliances including PCs, laptops and smartphones within NHS trusts.
Mark Ferrar, director of infrastructure in the technology office of the NHS Connecting for Health department, said it was essential to guarantee the confidentially of patient information.
"McAfee data protection technology closely matched our extensive requirements and at a price that represents exceptional value for the taxpayer," he added.
News of the contract comes as the NHS faces criticism over delays to the implementation of the electronic records project.
