IBM is to overhaul its existing security strategy to focus on business sustainability, a leading executive at the technology company has said.

IT Pro reports that general manager of IBM Internet Security Systems Val Rahmani told delegates at the RSA Conference in San Francisco that companies need to ensure that their security policies focus on "sustaining the business".

She described the security industry's "obsession" with fighting worms, Trojans, viruses and other malware as a "futile pursuit".

"The security business has no future. We're putting an end to it. There are headlines every day. We keep rolling that boulder up the hill, and just when we think we've got there, along comes a new threat and we are starting all over again, " Ms Rahmani explained.

Instead of working on each individual security threat, businesses should focus on sustainability, implementing security into systems and processes, she added.

Her comments come as security experts Mark Bregman from Symantec and Dan Hubbard from Websense made a "bleak prognosis" about the future of data security due to the rapid pace at which new threats emerge compared to the time taken by businesses and organisations to respond, IT Week reports.
