In order for businesses to avoid the financial cost resulting from lost data, businesses need better insight into where their information is stored and where it is going, according to an IT security provider.
Figures provided by a Ponemon Institute study indicate that data breach is the leading cause of financial loss for organisations, costing an average of $197 (£100) for every incident recorded.
Industry experts suggest that combining data protection technology and government legislation is the best way to tackle threats to information security.
Charles Kolodgy, vice president at IT researcher IDC, said: "Instituting data protection is becoming a standard solution to the problem. However, enforcing data protection policies becomes the critical challenge."
He added that protecting privileged and proprietary data on portable devices is a particular challenge for all companies.
This news follows the results of a study by technology news provider vnunet.com last week, which found that 77 per cent of those questioned thought that recent increases in the number of security breaches warranted legislation making encryption mandatory.
