A UK association of penetration-testing providers has been launched by the IT security industry.

The newly-formed Council of Registered Ethical Security Testers (Crest) provides standards and professional qualifications in the IT security field, which have been absent in the past, according to Computer Weekly.

Crest is the result of collaboration between 30 companies, which aims to provide a not-for-profit organisation that will guarantee IT security standards, reports the technology news provider.

It is hoped the association will provide a model for other countries to follow.

Crest chairman Paul Docherty said: "We are looking to internationalise the model and have already attracted some interest from overseas organisations to establish local chapters."

The news follows calls from Get Safe Online for search engines to be more transparent about the user information they are storing and why they are doing so.

Managing Director Tony Neate said that users should be able to know if providers are looking at the information they put online.
