Information technology giant Mozilla has admitted sending out a plug-in infected with malware.

Writing in the firm's official blog, Mozilla security chief Window Snyder said that the Vietnamese language pack for Firefox Two contains inserted code resulting from a virus infection.

"Everyone who downloaded the most recent Vietnamese language pack since February 18, 2008 got an infected copy," Ms Snyder added.

"Mozilla does virus scans at upload time but the virus scanner did not catch this issue until several months after the upload."

She went on to write that the exact number of compromised downloads could not be determined, although 16,667 total downloads of the pack have been recorded since November 2007.

Earlier this week, a study conducted by IT security provider Finjan found that hackers have stolen 5,388 files of business and personal information from companies all over the world and are currently storing all the compromised information on one server.
